In our society we are constantly being bombarded with advertising, we cannot possibly get away from. Advertisement can be found everywhere, trying to get our attention, through posters, TV, computers, cell phones, and in many different forms, such as billboards, commercials, street ads, movies. I could go on and on. President of the Marketing Firm Yankelovich, Jay Walker-Smith has said, we've gone from being exposed to about 500 ads a day back in the 1970's to as many as 5,000 a day today. However, advertiser are not the only ones talking, the public clapping back with culture jamming. The public is altering advertising to create a different message than just "buy my product." When I reflect on this topic, I realize, I may have seen culture jamming, but never considered the impact. In my opinion, I think this is a great way for the public and advertising to have more of a dialogue, than "just buy me." Culture jamming has created a voice for the public to advocate for change. Everyone needs a voice.
Especially youth. This is why I believe cultural jamming could be beneficially to an art classroom. Students could spread subvertising, positive messages, or promoting change in a social or political issue. Stickers, like advertisements are literally everywhere. Creating stickers can be a fantastic way for students to get their voices heard. Stickers would be a great way to spread positive comments in there school.
No matter if it is as small as stickers, or as big as a collaborative mural that promotes change, art classrooms would benefit by giving students a ways (that are legal) in which they can voice their beliefs and things they are willing to stand up for (that is not illegal) and creates a dialogue.
Below are links: first one: 15 public art that is promoting change the second one: a list of street artist Both great resources for inspiration in the classroom
These are my stickers I created. (Which are less culture jamming and more less spreading positive comments.)

Rachel,
ReplyDeleteI agree that I have also seen culture jamming around, but never realized it's impact! And I would definitely credit that to how my viewpoints have been shaped!
Lastly, your stickers are absolutely beautiful!!!
I agree that advertisements are often more than just selling a product. I feel that advertisements that promote their product, while also raising awareness to a cause, grab my attention the most. If an advertisement pops up that supports something I believe in, I feel that I want to trust that brand more, or want to put my money into that company over one that may not support what I am passionate about.
